How Scholarships Help Families
A scholarship can help cover tuition and educational costs so you can choose the school that fits your child — public, private, faith-based, or another option available where you live.
You focus on finding the right school for your child. The scholarship helps pay for it.
Who Qualifies
Most American students qualify. Eligibility is based on your household income compared to the median income in your area — not a fixed national number. Families earning up to 300% of the local area median gross income (as defined by HUD) qualify, which covers an estimated 90% of K–12 students nationwide. Your child also needs to be eligible to enroll in a public elementary or secondary school.
Where Scholarships Are Available
Scholarships are available to families in states that have chosen to take part in the program. Many states have already opted in, with more expected before scholarships begin. To receive a scholarship, your child needs to live in a participating state — so the first step is simply checking whether yours is on the list.
Where Scholarships Come From
Scholarships are awarded by Scholarship Granting Organizations (SGOs) — nonprofits that meet strict standards and are funded by donor contributions made possible through the Education Freedom Tax Credit. AFC Scholarship Fund is a national SGO built to bring scholarships to families at scale.
What a Scholarship Can Help Cover
A scholarship can go toward the real costs of the right school for your child — so the choice isn’t limited by what your family can afford. Depending on your school and state, that can include:
Tuition at a private or faith-based school
Tutoring and special-education services
Books, technology, and learning materials
Other approved education expenses

Scholarship application windows open after the Education Freedom Tax Credit activates in 2027. Register now and we’ll email you the moment applications open in your state — with everything you need to apply.
Step 1: You make a charitable contribution to a qualified scholarship granting organization (SGO).
Step 2: That contribution generates a dollar-for-dollar federal tax credit of up to $1,700.
Step 3: The credit reduces what you owe the IRS when you file your federal taxes.
The EFTC is not a deduction. It is a direct reduction of your federal tax liability. You donate first; the credit follows at filing. The program launches January 1, 2027.
For example, if you’re in the 24% tax bracket and claim a $1,700 deduction, you save about $408. That’s it.
A tax credit, on the other hand, reduces your actual tax bill, dollar for dollar. If you donate $1,700 to a qualified scholarship granting organization (SGO) and owe $2,000 in federal taxes, you now owe $300. Your tax liability decreases by $1,700, not $408.
If you’re wondering whether your family qualifies, register your interest and we’ll help you find out.
